I am still going to stitch it up, but goddamn, how close to gauge do I need to get!? Why is it so bizarrely gargantuan?

See my other post - I feel your pain. (Although I'm less accomplished than you and so it reflects my skills more, I still have problems with the whole fitting thing.) Is it all over that it's too big, or is it just one part?
I'm starting to consider felting the really huge sweater I made my husband. (It was supposed to be oversized, and I thought I should make it big because he's barrel-chested, but unfortunately I didn't think about the fact that neckholes and sleeves scale up proportionately.) I've also thought about un-knitting it, but the logistics of soaking and drying all that yarn are daunting.
